R.I.P Grande Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha

Brief History of the Academy of Master Little John Pastinha-Capoeira Angola Sports Center
The Academy of Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha was inaugurated on May 2, 1982, in order to resume the transmission line of Capoeira Angola, the way it was preserved by the Academy Pastinha. This transmission line was interrupted when the Academy Pastinha was disabled after the withdrawal of his former master in the wide space of the pillory, currently SENAC restaurant and aggravated by his death in 1981.
Linking the Academy with Mestre João Pequeno and Mestre Pastinha not limited exclusively to the ways of teaching and playing, but also the associative spirit, to the extent that the Mestre João Pequeno reactivated the Sports Center of Capoeira Angola, an entity created by Pastinha, in order to aggregate the angoleiros to use common tools for the preservation and expansion of Capoeira Angola as well as means of social support to the capoeiristas.
It must be emphasized that at the time the
Mestre João Pequeno rehabilitate the Centre, old masters of capoeira were undergoing socioeconomic difficulties, some of them died as paupers, including Pastinha.
The inauguration of the Academy of
Mestre João Pequeno did not take shape as the result of a particular idea and isolated from its founders. For his appearance was historic demands. Emerged as a recommendation from the community of Bahian capoeira, black movements, the culture of government institutions such as the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Municipality of Salvador, the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia, Bahiatursa, IPAC - Institute of Artistic and Cultural Heritage Pro-and memory, which together participated in the 10th Regional Seminar of Capoeira, held in Salvador in 1980. The cast of the recommendations of the seminar there were indications that public institutions to facilitate the emergence of new spaces for the practice of capoeira, with the participation of the old masters, who would have the opportunity to open their gyms.
So in 80 years, was already underway in the city of Salvador is a cultural process of great vitality, the main driving force behind the popular culture of origin african-Bahian, which today has been able to transform into a cultural center of Salvador international reference. In this scenario, the Candomblé and capoeira, african music and dance to be an activity of "tip", and it (scenario) the Academy of Little John has an important role in several aspects. Autobiography of John Pereira dos Santos - Mestre João Pequeno Pastinha.

Mestre João Pequeno

A tribute to the life of ninety years and seventy-five years of capoeira. Biography:On December 27, 1917 was born in Bahia Araci João Pereira dos Santos, son of Mary mercy of Jesus, and a descendant of Indian potter and Maximiliano Pereira dos Santos, whose profession was the Cowboy Corner Farm Vargem of Fires in the region. At fifteen years (in 1933) fled the drought on foot, going up Alagoinhas thence to Mata de São João, where he remained ten years and worked on the plantation of sugar cane as caller beef, then met Juvêncio Farm in St. Peter, who was blacksmith and capoeira was there that he met the roost.
At 25, he moved to Salvador, where he worked as a conductor (conductor) of trams and construction as an assistant mason, mason, and became a construction worker. It was in the building that it had met Candido Barbosa who was the master boot off a July 2, Barbosa gave the training, gathered a group of friends and on weekends was in the wheels of the Green Cobrinha Call call.
Enrolled in the Sports Center of Capoeira Angola, which was a congregation of capoeiristas coordinated by Pastinha.
Since then,
João Pereira started to follow the master Pastinha who soon offered him the post of Treinel, it was for an average of 1945, some time after João Pereira then became João Pequeno, so nicknamed by the master Pastinha.
In the late sixties when Pastinha could no longer teach capoeira has little to
João saying, " João, you take care of it, because I will die, but die only the body and in spirit I live, as long as my Capoeira name will not disappear. "
In the gym Pastinha, João Pequeno taught capoeira to all the other great capoeiristas who originated there and later became great masters, among them
João Grande, who became his great playing partner, Mitchell and Bullfinch. Was advised by Pastinha to work less and spend more to capoeira. Although I thought it would of realized that 50 years would live much more on reaching this age.
Faced with the hardness of the big city João Pequeno was also marketer and coal came to be known as
João do carvão, Garcia lived in, and in a shack near the Dock of Tororo.
His first wife died, but a later met Ms. Edalzuita, popularly known as Dona Mommy in the Pillory in the days of gold academy of his Pastinha, were family, and with great effort built a house on a farm Couto, there in the suburbs, well away from the center where they live and receive visits from capoeiristas from around the world.
For João Pequeno capoeira fighter should be an educated person "a good tree to bear good fruit." For whom capoeira is very good not only for the body to remain flexible and young, but also to develop the mind and even serve as therapy, besides being used in various ways, worked as the land, you can even take her food.
João Pequeno sees capoeira as a process of individual development, a struggle created by the weak to the strong face, but also a dance, which no one should hurt the couple who dance, defends the idea that good capoeiristas know how to stop the foot not to hurt the opponent.
Some time after the death of Mestre Pastinha in 1981,  Mestre João Pequeno reopened the Capoeira Angola Sports Center at Fort Santo Antonio Alem do Carmo (1982), where is the new basis of resistance, where Capoeira Angola started into the world while encountering many difficulties to maintain his academy was able to form some teachers and a large number of disciples.

In the nineties there were several attempts by the state government to vacate the Fort St. Anthony for reform and change of use of Forte, paradoxically at a time also it was widely honored to receive the title of citizen of the city of Salvador, by the local councils. In 2003 the  Mestre João Pequeno was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Uberlândia and the Commendation of the Order of Cultural Merit becoming Commander of Culture of the Republic by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. In 2007 received by the local councils Medal Zumbi dos Palmares. Finally in 2008 is honored with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA). "It's a sweet person," say everyone has the opportunity to meet  Mestre João Pequeno, whose simple, spontaneity and charisma to seduce all who come to Fort St. Anthony check your wheels, is a playful, but also leaves no giving a stick who exalt themselves in and forget the fundamentals of play and dance.
The annual festival commemorating his birthday is a truly spontaneous event of capoeira, home of a great wheel, with the participation of several teachers and community members capoerana.
In addition to being impressed everyone who has the opportunity to see him play with poultry and its outstanding mandigagem, Little John stands out as an educator in capoeira, capoeira in a higher authority of his time, a two-fight and life in defense of the noble art of African descent.
The  Mestre João Pequeno, boasts of the merits achieved with capoeira, this is clear in one of his speeches, which always repeats in due course, "... my father called me Doctor, but do not put me in school, but through poultry'm doctor. "
